Yes. You can connect any subdomain — portfolio.yourname.com, work.yourname.com, or anything else — using the same CNAME record process.
Do I need to buy a domain through Documentgate?
No. Buy your domain from wherever you prefer. Documentgate doesn't sell domains and doesn't require you to move your registration anywhere.
Is SSL really free?

What happens if I remove my custom domain later?
